Many have fly fishing dated around 200 A.D. It would be your job to verify any information as to the fishing flies or fishing with fly accuracy. We are simply passing on the information we have studied. When the first feather and fur covered hooks appeared may have been as long ago as 30,000 or more years and probably around southern Europe. Hooks for fishing were first manufactured of bone, stone and different wooden materials. Feathers, hair and other materials were added later to create fishing flies for fly fishing. The fly is believed to be the bait that is the most successful fishing tool for the majority of catches in our opinion. The wet fly for especially big fish!

You can fly fish with a fly reel and rod, a spinning rod and reel or a cane pole with a fishing line that floats or does not float, you can fly fish just holding a line in your hand if you are so inclined to such an activity and could probably do so with little practice. There are no big secrets to this sport other than the skill of how the fishing flies on the end of ones line or tippet is tied, presented and it's relevance as to what might be normally eaten or defended against by a fish residing in that particular area. Most flies you purchase from local fly shops and on line will work for you to some degree of success depending on who tied the fly and who is fishing it? Fly fishing is no longer only a rich mans sport. Anyone and everyone can participate today and do!

You do not need a $1000.00+ outfit for fly fishing. And feel free to ignore the few that may wander up and down your stream or lake telling you there opinion of how you should fish and what you should do with the fish you catch, unless of course your activity is against the law for that particular stream, river or body of water. Know the laws where you fish and obey them. We believe in catching and releasing, but we also believe you have a right to keep, eat, and do what ever the law allows with what you catch. You paid as much as the other person for the right to fish that location so do it within the law and enjoy!

The photo below is of a 9 LB German Brown caught by Drifter in the Ozark Mountains on a Missouri nymph #10 hook, 7X tippet (to us regular fly fishers that 7X tippet would be about a 4 lb leader). This is the same fish used on our americanflyfisher.com logo above.
